Jail Ministry

The Prison and Jail Ministry (PJM) currently visits Detention Centers, Jails and Prisons, bringing the Gospel message of faith and hope to adults and juveniles. The Catholic Diocese of Brownsville oversees four counties: Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr and Willacy.

The Office of Jail Ministry is lead by a director and an assistant.  They provide visits to jails; prepare volunteers to help with the ministries of religious education.  They serve the inmates and their families with counseling, comfort and consolation, and coordinate the assistance of the clergy as necessary.   With the help of volunteers.

Jail Ministry Goals

·         Evangelize the detainees and offenders, reinforcing Christian values so they can recover their dignity and to assure them that even though they are in prison they continue to be sons of God and members of the church.
·         Facilitate the reception of Reconciliation and Eucharist Sacraments.
·         Implement the Catholic presence in all the prisons, jails and detention centers under the care of the CDOB.
·         Implement sufficient teams with capable and committed volunteers to share their gifts with the incarcerated.
·         Provide means of formation to the detainees and offenders, materials and services to facilitate the practice of their Catholic faith and their process of conversion.

VOLUNTEERS.

·         A Volunteer is an individual who donates time and services to the PJM. A volunteer may serve as a religious educator, group leader, mentor, coordinator, facilitator, choir director, translator, typist, etc. All these according to their training and gifts in order to accomplish the PJM goals.

·         The PJM ask volunteers to commit themselves to attend the assigned facility, PJM meetings, special events and training required. The volunteer should keep in mind that he or she is going to be a roll model for the detainees and offenders; punctuality and commitment are a must, besides having the ability to follow instructions and to comply with the specific rules and regulations of the facility.
